We all have those special moments in life that we want to capture and cherish forever. From weddings and graduations to birthdays and anniversaries, sometimes the best way to commemorate these occasions is to create a poster that you can hang on your wall for years to come. With the help of Shutterfly, creating a custom poster with your own photos is easier than ever. We’ll walk you through the process of designing a one-of-a-kind piece of wall art, from poster sizes and unique templates to all the ways you can personalize it to make it your own.

How to Make Custom Posters With Your Photos

Graduation collage full of beautiful pictures and images of friends hung above study desk

Creating a poster from your photos can be a great way to display your favorite memories in an eye-catching way. Whether it’s a scenic landscape, a family portrait, or a special event, a poster can be a great way to show off your favorite photos and add a splash of color to any wall. With Shutterfly, you can easily make a personalized poster that’s perfect for any occasion.

Step 1: Select the Photos for Your Poster

The most important step in creating a custom poster is selecting the right photos. Our templates give you the option to feature one photo or a collage of several of your favorite snapshots on one high-quality print. When choosing photos, you’ll want to pick images that work together to tell a story or capture a moment in time. Think about the theme of your print and choose photos that will help to bring that theme to life. Choosing a variety of photos will help create an interesting and visually appealing piece of wall art that looks great in your home or office.

Two custom photo posters

Step 2: Prepare Your Images

Once you’ve chosen your photos, you’ll need to prepare them for your poster. Make sure that all of your photos are high-resolution and properly cropped for the size of the wall art print you’re creating. The higher the resolution, the better the quality of the poster. You can also use Shutterfly’s editing tools to enhance the colors, crop them, and adjust the contrast of your images to make sure they look their best.

Step 3: Choose Your Poster Print Style

Shutterfly offers two unique poster print styles. Premium posters measure at 22” x 28” and offer optimized brightness with a premium matte finish. Collage poster prints are available in a range of sizes — from 8” x 8” to 20” x 30”. This style uses Fuji crystal archive photo paper with a glossy finish.

Premium poster serving as custom wall decor for a great bedroom aesthetic

Step 4: Select Your Photo Poster Template

After you’ve selected either a premium poster or a collage poster, browse through the templates to pick the design perfect for you. Whether you want to showcase one image or several, we have plenty of options that you can personalize to make even more unique. With room for custom text and unique designs, you can make your own poster perfect for you or a friend with Shutterfly.

Step 5: Designing the Custom Poster

Now it’s time to design your poster! When making your print, you’ll be able to adjust the layout, add text, customize the fonts, and change the background color or pattern. You can also use Shutterfly’s drag-and-drop editor to move and resize your photos to your liking. Whether you’re designing a graduation theme with your graduating year or a Mother’s Day gift for your mom, you have free range to create the perfect personalized poster that showcases your best memories.

Wrapping Up

After you finish designing your poster print, consider designing even more wall art pieces for your home. Canvas prints, metal prints, and photo tiles are all great options to put your most cherished memories on display.

What Is A Photo Print?

Framed prints hanging above table. A photo print is a physical copy of a photograph, printed on paper (although some are chemically treated, about 80% of what’s sold is acid-free and lignin-free paper) or other materials of varying sizes. Photo prints are used in frames, collages, and greeting cards and can help add a personal element to your home or mailed greeting or invitation.

To make sure that the photo paper you choose fits the project you’re planning to use it for, there are several things you’ll need to consider, including photo paper sizes. If you’re printing photos to put in frames, they will need to be the same size as the frame (generally, frames come in 8×10 and 11×14 inch sizes). Otherwise, you’ll run the risk of having to cut the photo down to size which can reduce a portion of the beautiful photography you want to display.

Different types of finishes and materials can greatly change the style of your photos, so doing your research before printing can help make sure you get the final product you want.

How To Choose Photo Paper Finishes

The finish of the paper you choose to print your photo on can make a huge difference in its visual appeal. We have a variety of photo paper options so you can choose the best finishes that show off the vibrant colors of your favorite photos. The finish can also determine how long the photograph holds up over time, how easily it shows blemishes, and the type of matting or frame that will work best. Below, we break down the most popular print finishes and the types of picture frames you should use to show them off.

Matte Finish

A matte finish means that the photo doesn’t have any shine, making it a great option for photos you want to display in a glass frame or in brighter areas. Because light doesn’t bounce off this finish, there isn’t as much of a glare, which can be beneficial in calmer areas like living rooms or doctors’ offices.

Framed gallery wall over entryway table. Without this final reflective gloss, matte photo paper can often come across as darker and less structured than their glossy counterparts. They also show fingerprints more easily than other finishes, meaning you need to be careful when handling and framing your premium matte photos.

Glossy Finish

Glossy photo paper is a great way to add extra shine, dimension, and color to your photos. Digital photos printed on glossy paper tend to appear crisper and sharper. Photographs in nature or anything outdoors, with a glossy finish appear to burst with color. The finish gives your photo prints a mirror reflection and high shine.

Square photo prints pinned on wooden post. This modern finish is beautiful on photo prints that will be hung without a glass frame. It’s important not to use a glass frame with this type of finish for several reasons. First, the photo paper itself will already be highly reflective, so adding glass around it can cause an unpleasant glare. Glossy paper is also kind of sticky, and can get stuck on glass frames and ruin the photo during removal. Photos with this gloss finish are often recommended to be matted and hung without a frame, or used in a collage without glass.

Pearl Finish

A pearl finish, sometimes referred to as luster, is a good balance of both matte and semi-shine. Known for having an almost iridescent quality, pearl finishes allow for some shine and contrast but don’t show blemishes as easily as glossier options. Pearl is often used for high-quality prints and photographs (such as wedding portraits or framed professional photography) as it has a unique texture that feels much more upscale than other similar finishes.

Cardstock Prints

Cardstock prints, while not known for enhancing photographs, are generally used for their durability. Because they are thicker papers, they can withstand being handled without showing damage or losing their shape. Cardstock paper is commonly used for business cards, flyers, scrapbooking, and even postcards. If you’re considering printing on cardstock, it’s best to take into account where your photo prints will be displayed and how many times they will be handled. If they’ll be passed around to a lot of people or if they need to hold up for an extended period of time without any protective covering, this type of paper is your best bet for long-term use.

Photo Printing Options

In addition to paper finishes, you will also need to decide the size and material for your printing paper. Depending on how you plan to display your photos throughout your home, you may need a variety of smaller and larger photo prints to create a collage, or only a few canvas prints to hang above your bed. Below, we break down all the available print sizes and materials to suit your visual goals.

Print Sizes

No matter your printing job, there are many sizes available to meet your needs. From 4×6 glossy photos for collages to panoramas on matte paper, our online portal has a wide range of standard and unique print sizes. Other sizes available for online ordering include 5×7, 5×15, 8×24 and 20×30. Each option allows for different paper types such as matte, glossy, and pearl finishes as well as cardstock photo prints. Below is a full list of sizes available for purchase, some of which qualify for one-hour pickup:

  • 4×4
  • 4×6
  • 5×7
  • 8×8
  • Wallet (4)
  • 11×14
  • 12×12
  • 8×10
  • 5×15
  • 12×36
  • 8×24
  • 16×20
  • 20×30

Large Format Prints

Large format prints, while they may seem similar to poster prints, are a bit more customizable and upscale than posters. Printed on Fuji Crystal Archive professional-grade paper, these prints provide a crisper color contrast. And because of their size, they cannot be printed using traditional-sized inkjet printers.

When considering this type of printing for your home or project, size and finish options need to be taken into account. While other larger prints such as posters are home to glossy finishes, large format prints can be finished with gloss, matte or pearl overlays. Unframed prints could benefit from the sheen that matte and pearl overlays provide, while glass-enclosed prints should be matte to prevent any glare. Large format prints come in the following sizes:

  • 11×14
  • 12×12
  • 5×15
  • 12×36
  • 8×24
  • 16×20
  • 20×30

Art Prints

Traditionally, an art print is a reproduction of a well-known piece of art. Printed on heavyweight and higher quality paper, art prints can help bring popular works into homes across the country without the hefty price tag. But fine art printing doesn’t just stop at reproduction of famous works. These days, fine art printing is a popular option for families wanting to display their favorite vacation photos or family portraits.

Photo prints hanging on wall. Many of our art prints are matted, adding an extra layer of sophistication to an already beautiful print. Other options for printing fine art include overlaid graphics, frames, and watercolor paper for a unique surface texture perfect for copies of painted artwork. But no matter which option you choose, fine art paper is a great way to add elegance to your home or small business.

Poster Prints

When you think of posters you may recall the glossy prints you tore out of magazines and plastered around your room as a teenager. But today, poster prints are much more complex than that, offering multiple ways to make your favorite photographs appear larger than life.

With collage posters, you can combine all of your favorite family or vacation photos into one seamless print. The format of collages are endless, offering you plenty of unique shapes and overlays to create a one-of-a-kind piece for your home. Some popular options include heart-shaped collages for wedding photos or a grid format to highlight a variety of unrelated photos in one cohesive display.

Canvas and framed prints. Premium posters have similar customization abilities as collages, but are generally printed on higher quality paper and have more saturated colors. They are best suited for professional photos you want to highlight, as the larger size of poster prints offers a more detailed view than standard prints. If your photo isn’t high-quality or begins to look bad when blown up, you may want to consider including it in a collage to bring the size down or printing in a smaller size altogether.

Canvas Prints

A canvas print is a photograph that has been printed on a sheet of canvas, similar to the process of printing a photograph on paper. With canvas prints, however, there is an added layer of texture from the material of the canvas which is then stretched around a frame and secured from behind. This way, all you see is the printed photo. It’s often used to reprint a popular work of art for distribution or for family photos. Well-loved for its artistic elements, the canvas material has a matte surface that gives the photograph a museum-quality look.

Canvas art gallery wall. While a frameless canvas print is the more popular option, framed canvas prints have also gained popularity in recent years. They add a more modern element to canvas photos as unframed canvas can sometimes look unfinished in comparison to other, traditionally framed paper prints.

Other Printing Options

Photo gallery on brick wall. If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, there are a lot of other materials and styles available for printing to bring your home decor to the next level. You can display your favorite artistic photographs on glass or metal for an eye-popping display of color, or print your photo on a puzzle or phone case to add a new twist to a family portrait. Check out all of the out-of-the-box printing options below:

  • Glass Prints: Perfect for bright living rooms and hallways, glass prints can bring new life to your photos. With multiple sizes, formats, and shapes to choose from, printing on glass is a distinct format that can brighten up any room with it’s reflective nature.
  • Photo Tiles: Great for a dorm room or apartment, photo tiles are easy to hang and rearrange without any damage or tools. Create unique gallery wall displays to showcase your favorite pictures on custom photo tiles.
  • Metal Prints: Make your colors come alive indoors or out with a metal print, which hosts a bright white colored background to bring out contrast and tone in even the darkest photos. With portrait and panoramic sizing available as well as a moisture-resistant coating, photo prints on metal are a perfect option for any environment.
  • Acrylic Prints: To give your photo depth and vibrancy, consider an acrylic print that frames your traditional photo with plexiglass and a protective backing. Not only does this framing option provide a cleaner look than canvas or metal, but it’s also UV resistant, meaning your new purchase will be built to last.
  • Wood Prints: For those looking to bring a natural element into their home, wood prints are a great option for showcasing their favorite photos. With plenty of grains and colors to choose from, wood-printed photographs can match a variety of decors. However, it’s worth noting that with wooden prints, any white in your photos won’t show up, instead the white will match the color of the wood it’s printed on.
  • Photo Puzzles: Get the whole family involved by letting them put together their favorite pictures piece by piece. Ranging from 60 to 1,014 pieces, these puzzles have varying difficulty levels great for family members of all ages.
  • Picture Phone Cases: Take your favorite photos with you wherever you go with phone case prints. Available in sizes that fit most iPhones, these phone cases are durable and come in matte or glossy finishes to suit your style.
  • Photo Books: Another great way to bring together all your favorite photos from a specific vacation or event is with photo books. Our process allows you to customize every detail. Or, our experts can curate an example for you, grouping together your photos that go well together for an overall beautiful aesthetic.
  • Fleece Photo Blankets: Print your beloved pet or your favorite sunset picture on a blanket so you can snuggle up in something you love. Choose from sherpa, microfiber, or plush fleece and pair it with a matching throw pillow to complete your personalized ensemble.
  • Photo Calendars: A calendar full of memorable photos makes a great anniversary or Christmas gift, and is something the whole family is sure to enjoy throughout the year. The calendars come in plenty of options including an easel calendar, desk calendar, and even monthly planners.

Closing Thoughts on High-Quality Photo Paper

Decorating your family home or office is a great way to show off your hobbies and personal style. And with plenty of photo printing options to choose from, you have a great opportunity to get creative with how you choose to highlight your favorite pictures. For example, a fleece blanket showcasing the view from your childhood home can provide much needed comfort to anyone who needs it. Meanwhile, a family portrait printed on glass can bring a new level of polish to a gallery wall. 1. Framed Collage

Perhaps you have family photos throughout the ages or you want to display your wedding photos in a highly creative way. A framed collage will let you place multiple photos together in a unique layout and show off a variety of photos at the same time. Display four photos in a symmetrical rectangular layout, or place up to 10+ photos in a highly visual, large photo collage. Choose from our multi-photo framed prints to select the layout that makes sense for your vision. Photo collages are especially great for kids’ photos, pet photos, and different shots from the same day or photoshoot.

Instead of printing photos and purchasing a photo frame online to make a collage, it’s easier to design your framed collage with Shutterfly. With a collage, you’ll want to make sure all the photos sit evenly in the frame. Even if they’re laid out sporadically, you’ll still want them to look even and neat. By opting to print and frame photos in a collage with Shutterfly, we’ll make sure the layout is exactly what you’ve picked online.

2. Framed Art Prints

A framed art print transforms your photos into a unique display complete with borders, messages, monograms, and other visual elements. Rather than fitting your photo print into a mat and choosing to frame photos without additional personalization, an art print gives you more options. Design a photo collage that’s a unique shape, such as a crescent moon or even the words Mom and Dad to create a loving gift. For a family portrait, you can add your family name and monogram in an elegant font on the bottom of the photo print, adding a simple yet professional touch.

Framed art prints also make great gifts for others since you can choose designs for Valentine’s Day, weddings, graduations, and more. Designing an art print through Shutterfly is just like hiring a designer to style your print into a timeless piece of art, yet it’s much more affordable and takes less time.

3. Large Framed Photo Prints

Whether you’re working with a small space where a focal print would look great or a large wall that you need to fill, large photo prints are a great way to go. With Shutterfly, you can order framed photo prints as big as 24×46 inches, making them the size of a medium poster. Photo collages will look great in a large framed photo print, or it’s also the perfect size for printing digital photos that are high quality.

Consider your favorite photo from your wedding or one of your favorite photos of the kids. These days, even your smartphone photos are high quality enough to blow into a large photo print. In a much larger size, you can see details you may not have caught on your phone or while the photo was sitting on your laptop.

4. Framed Canvas Prints

If you’re looking for a more natural or casual option to frame pictures, consider framed canvas prints. The natural texture matched with a metallic frame is perfect for any interior design style and especially looks great on a gallery wall as a unique texture. The canvas material will make your photos look even more timeless and memorable. When you choose to print digital photos on canvas, you can count on durability and a unique, boho-chic look.

Place your framed canvas prints from photos near indoor plants or windows to highlight even more of the natural textures. When choosing photos, travel memories and destination shots always look great on canvas, as well as baby photos and everyday family moments. As with Shutterfly’s art prints, you can add your family name or a brief message to some of the canvas design styles.

When you have especially wide photos, they’ll look great as panoramic photography prints. Accommodating your wide photo to a frame that fits will make it look as if it’s in a professional gallery. Panoramic photography prints look especially great if you have multiple photos that match together or three portions of the same photo separated into a panoramic design.

Experiment with one panoramic print or three side by side that complement each other. You can also pair your panoramic framed prints with smaller square or rectangular prints to create a fun, cohesive collage on the wall. Guests will love coming over and seeing your home transformed into an elegant art space with panoramic prints.

Tips for Displaying Framed Photos

Printing and framing pictures is just the first step. Once you have the best framed photo prints, displaying them properly can make all the difference to your interior style and design. Use our tips below to properly display your high-quality photo prints. No matter the design, there’s an easy way to make sure your framed prints look great. We’ll make sure wherever you put them is a place where they can shine on their own or complement your other framed pictures, furniture, and decor.

A gallery wall is one of the most popular placement styles for wall art, and for good reason. A gallery wall is a type of collage itself, and when placed properly it can be much more interesting to look at than standard framed prints laid out side by side on the wall. A gallery wall can fit nearly anywhere, but some of the best spots are your living room or a hallway.

Your gallery wall can be limited to a small square space on the wall or lengthened to fit horizontally across an entire wall space. How you set up your gallery wall all depends on how much space you have and the size of your framed photo prints. As you create your gallery wall, choose a different size picture frame with pictures for a collage effect. You can also mix and match frame styles for a more eclectic look, or keep each frame the same style to make it more elegant. As you hang your photos, make sure there’s an even amount of space between them and surrounding the gallery wall so it looks best visually.

Display Framed Prints on a Tabletop

If you don’t have space on your walls or looking for more personalized tabletop decor, you can always use your framed prints standing up. This option will look best with small framed prints that you can lean against other decor or use a picture stand to make them sit upright. If you have a fireplace mantel, that’s also a great place for standing your prints upright. Using your prints off the wall can make the home feel cozier and allow your guests to get a better look at some of your favorite family memories.

Choose a Custom Frame for Each Print

Even if you have a specific design theme you’d like to stick with as you create framed photo prints, you can still get creative with the frames. Creating personalized frames is a great way to make sure the frame complements the photo and makes it look its best. With Shutterfly’s unique picture frames, you can add fun quotes or captions that match your photo. Personalize your frame by color and background design as well as choosing the font styles you’d like to use for the text.

Personalized frames are especially great if you’re looking to use photo prints as tabletop decor. Shutterfly’s personalized frames all come with a built-in stand that makes them easy to place horizontally or vertically. All personalized picture frames measure 8×10 inches, so they’re a standard picture size for some of your smaller prints that you’d like to use.

Use Framed Artwork That Matches Your Furniture

If you’re going for a more cohesive interior design style, match your framed prints to your furniture and the rest of your home decor. If you’re making framed art prints, it can look especially great if you design your print with the same colors as your furniture or accent colors throughout the home. If you have a wide variety of colors in your prints, try matching the frame to your primary furniture colors. Shutterfly offers a variety of picture frame colors so you can find something to match, whether you have black furniture, brown, metallic, rustic ash grey, or white.

Use a Deluxe Mat for Framed Prints

To make your framed prints look even more like a professional gallery, opt for a deluxe mat print. With deluxe options, you can choose from unique and artsy shapes as well as a more durable mat that makes any photos pop. With a deluxe mat, you’ll still be able to choose between a single image or the opportunity to create a photo collage with 5+ photos in a single frame. A deluxe mat print paired with a frame that matches the rest of your interior design will make your home look like you hired a professional to help decorate!
