Second Harvest Food Bank - May 3, 2014The place is a huge warehouse. They feed over a quarter million people per month. Less than 5% of these 253,000 people are homeless. More than 50% of them are low income, but a great many of them do not qualify for food stamps. Mostly they are the working poor. More than 50 volunteers showed up to move and sort donated food for processing and distribution to the recipients. Additionally, there is a volunteer staff of another dozen or so, to help, guide and direct the participants. This is real work, and a real and necessary contribution to assisting the less fortunate in our community. This is the kind of Service Above Self that we, as Rotarians, can take pride in helping to perform. |
